Typing key — how to spell sounds ▾
Type the way a word sounds. Use double letters for long vowels and capitals for the retroflex (hard) consonants. Everything else is lowercase.
| a aa · i ii/ee · u uu/oo | aa = long a; ee = long i (as in preeti); oo = long u (as in moon) |
| e E · o O · ai au | South Indian: lowercase e/o are short, capital E/O are long (snEham). In Hindi e/o are already long. |
| k kh g gh | Velars — k, kha, ga, gha |
| ch chh j jh | Palatals — cha, chha, ja, jha |
| T Th D Dh N | Retroflex (capitals) — hard Ta, Tha, Da, Dha, Na |
| t th d dh n | Dental (lowercase) — soft ta, tha, da, dha, na |
| p ph b bh m | Labials — pa, pha, ba, bha, ma |
| y r l v w s h | y, r, l, v/w, s, h |
| sh Sh L | sha (श), retroflex Sha (ष), retroflex La (ळ/ள) |
| M H | M = anusvara/nasal (ं), H = visarga (ः) |
| Tamil extras: R zh | ற (hard/trilled r), ழ (zha, as in tamizh) |
| Malayalam extras: R zh | റ (hard r, paRayuka), ഴ (zha, mazha); a word-final ന/ണ/ര/ല/ള auto-becomes a chillu — avan → അവൻ, kaar → കാർ |
| final consonants | South Indian words auto-close a trailing consonant with a virama (tamizh → தமிழ்); Hindi keeps the inherent vowel (raam → राम) |
Transliteration converts the sound of a word from English letters into a native script — it is not translation. Pick a language, type the way the word sounds, and the script appears live. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded. This is a phonetic tool: for tricky Sanskrit-style spellings, use the typing key above.
Is this the same as Google transliteration?
It works the same way — you type phonetically in English and get the native script. This one runs fully offline in your browser.
Why is a retroflex letter wrong?
Use capitals for retroflex sounds — T Th D Dh N for the hard consonants, and Sh for ष. Lowercase gives the soft dental letters.
Is anything uploaded?
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser.
